Novo cd dos Killers

Dois anos após o álbum “Sam’s Town” chegar às lojas, o grupo norte-americano The Killers anuncia o lançamento do novo álbum. O disco recebeu o nome de “Day and Age” e o lançamento está previsto para novembro. A novidade foi informada pelo vocalista Brandon Flowers nos bastidores da apresentação que o grupo fez no último final de semana no Leeds Festival, no Reino Unido.

The I.T Crowd

Desde que terminou a quarta temporada do seriado The Office (Steve Carell rules!!), tenho voltado meus esforços para achar alguma série que seja ao menos comparável a essa série excelente. Assisti diversos episódios, de diversas séries (inclusive alguns episódios da série Extras, cujo protagonista é Ricky Gervais, o chefe da versão original britânica do The Office), mas nenhuma delas era tão engraçada quanto The Office. Foi então que achei um seriado chamado The I.T Crowd. O que posso dizer dessa série? Bem…. simplesmente fantástica, e sim, ela é comparável a The Office!!!

Até hoje, foram feitas apenas duas temporadas, cada uma com 6 episódios. Você pode baixar todos os episódios aqui:

E para quem já assistiu e gostou, uma boa notícia: a terceira temporada já vai começar a ser filmada, segundo notícia da BBC News:

Writing in his blog, Graham Linehan said he did not have time to choose the items that “litter the main set”.

He appealed for fans to suggest posters and toys to decorate the show’s “comic shop and batcave” look.

The show, which centres on a trio of computer support staff, won the Rose D’Or for best sitcom in Switzerland earlier this year.

Irish-born Mr Linehan said he had intended the set to look like “a geek’s Shangri-La”.

‘Geek references’

“In each series, I’ve felt we’ve nearly got there. Maybe this time, with you guys involved, we’ll finally nail it,” he wrote.

The writer added that he had only just completed the final episode of the new series. With just three weeks to go until the start of filming, that meant he did not have time to source props himself.

He added that items he liked to see on set included T-shirts, fanzines, board games and “geek references” and asked fans to contact Talkback Thames with their ideas.

Mr Linehan’s other screenwriting credits include Father Ted, Big Train, Black Books and Brass Eye.

The IT Crowd was also nominated for best sitcom at the Bafta television awards earlier this year.

Street Fighting Mathematics

Muito interessante esse curso oferecido pelo MIT. O objetivo dele é ensinar coisas básicas de matemática de forma menos formal quanto possível. A descrição do curso é a que segue:

This course teaches the art of guessing results and solving problems without doing a proof or an exact calculation. Techniques include extreme-cases reasoning, dimensional analysis, successive approximation, discretization, generalization, and pictorial analysis. Applications include mental calculation, solid geometry, musical intervals, logarithms, integration, infinite series, solitaire, and differential equations. (No epsilons or deltas are harmed by taking this course.) This course is offered during the Independent Activities Period (IAP), which is a special 4-week term at MIT that runs from the first week of January until the end of the month.

O curso pode ser bastante útil no cotidiano e em áreas que usam matemática bem elementar, mas claro que em níveis mais avançados e no âmbito da pesquisa científica, o formalismo matemático é indispensável. Não adinata falar para os referees das revistas que você adivinhou algum resultado…
